Marketing is the single most important part of your business.

Why?

Without marketing, your customers do not know about you.

If you have no customers, you have no sales, without any sales you have no profits.  No profits - nothing to put in the bank - and a whole lot of costs besides.

No Profits = No business

At this point I tend to hear shouts along the lines of

‘I cannot afford expensive advertising’

‘I don’t have time to do leaflet drops’

Or even

‘I tried advertising and it doesn’t work’

I think we need to go back a step and look at the definition of this much abused word -‘Marketing’

www.dictionary.com defines it like this:

1. The act of buying or selling in a market

2.The total of activities involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing and selling.

Read that carefully.  Marketing is absolutely everything that you do to sell your products or services.  It is NOT just about ‘paid for’ advertising!

Try this exercise – write on a piece of paper (hopefully a very big piece) everything you have done (or plan to do) to promote your business.  Give yourself ten minutes to complete it, then scroll down (try not to cheat!) and see the list I compiled – this should not only give you a true picture of what marketing is, but perhaps some ideas too!

For further information on how to make the most of your business cards, leaflets and adverts, visit the Effective Literature and Free Advertising pages.  For more on marketing ideas, visit Finding Customers

Two final thoughts

  • Never dismiss a marketing idea just because it didn’t work the first time – you need to be constantly assessing the effectiveness of what you are doing to attract customers, but different ideas, work at different times, for different people…put it on the back burner and save it for another day.
  • If something works really well…don’t stop doing everything else! You should always have a range of options on the go…

Self Promotion Exercise

This is the list that I wrote…some of the things on it you may think do not count as marketing - but they are. The definition of marketing is
'Everything you do to promote yourself or your business' …

To put that into a 'Spiritual' context, remember that you probably got into this business because you want to help others.

In order to do this, you must have customers who need your help!
